We have decided to “go long” on rain this fall and winter, betting that we get enough to propagate a good winter pasture of rye, oats and clover. “Hoping” might be the better descriptor because we often bet wrong when it comes to rain predictions. Last year we did the opposite in our beaten down and droughty state of mind. Thinking a winter planting would be wasted time and money for lack of rain, we passed and then watched as enriching rain fell time and time again on our hibernating pastures. Will we see a repeat this year? I hope so but we had just finished preparing the pastures and broadcasting the seed when the Sci-Guy predicted an unusually dry October. Yikes! If you have an urge to gamble, try farming.
