So it sure feels like we are in a 180 degree turnaround weather-wise. Having spent 3 years in a super-heated drought that also included freeze-less and mild winters, we have turned a corner into heavy rain and bone chilling temperatures. The cold weather gives me hope that the drought really is out of our system because in the early days of farm stewardship, we had both extremes - flash-flooding rains and severe cold. The two seem to go together. Nonetheless, we remain cautious in our predictions about drought. If we go through spring and early summer 2014 with normal rainfall, wildflowers and sprouting grasses, then and only then will we celebrate our liberation from drought. Watch the next seven months. They will tell the tale. If the tale is told, we will celebrate July 4th for more than one kind of independence.
