All of the work that went into winter pasture is now being admired by us and enjoyed by the livestock. The dark green of winter pasture is somehow prettier than the green of summer. I suppose that’s because we see the yellow, golds and browns of the surrounding areas and the contrast is so nice. Whatever the reason, it brings great pleasure from the porch at sunrise and sunset each day.
Winter pasture has two advantages, one for the livestock, the other for the stewards of same. The cattle and pigs get a rich diet at a time when they would otherwise be nibbling poorer forage, hay or standing hay. And we stewards don’t spend our time hauling yet another bale of hay out to them – often in near freezing rain or a blowing wind out of the northwest.
Always look for conditions when everybody can be so happy as we are now.
